So what is social networking?

Social networking - the single greatest online phenomenon of the past five years - is defined as the bringing together of individuals into specific groups, like a small community of a neighbourhood, via social networking websites. Such sites are transforming the way we communicate with our friends, families and increasingly, brands. Even politicians now use social networking to communicate with their local communities online.

What is the difference between social networking and social media?

  • Social networking describes the act of connecting to others online.
  • Social media are the actual social networking websites, portals and technologies used for sharing and discussing information. For example, www.linkedin.com is a social medium used for career-based social networking activities.

How popular is social networking / social media?

In April 2010, Facebook was classified as the second popular website on Internet with over 400m users worldwide. Facebook only came second to Google and recently became the most visited site in the USA, a trend which the UK is ultimately likely to follow.

Since February 2009, people have been spending more time on social networking sites than they have on email, and the gap continues to widen. For example, the average user now spends 55 minutes per day on Facebook, interacting with an average of 130 friends.
